Peter J. Lamb Special Collection: Climate Variability and Its Impacts

The Peter J. Lamb Symposium was held in January 2016 at the 96th Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society in New Orleans, Louisiana. The symposium focused on Dr. Lamb’s research and extension legacy in regional climate diagnostics and dynamics, and seasonal forecasting as they relate to the climate system and economic development of Africa. Related, the January 2015 95th AMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, featured two oral sessions dedicated to his research on climate variability in precipitation processes, as part of the 27th Conference on Climate Variability and Change. Dr. Lamb passed away unexpectedly on May 28, 2014 at the age of 66, with much left to do. He was a mentor to many students and colleagues around the world.

This collection includes work presented at each event and also by others conducting closely related research and extension who could not be on hand to present. The collection will include contributions in climate diagnostics, climate modeling, ocean heat budgets, field measurements and monitoring for decision-making, seasonal forecasting, soil moisture budgets, climate early warning messaging, consultation and training workshops, and the societal impacts and applications. This includes work on the global atmosphere/ocean/earth system as it may relate to Africa and surrounding areas.
